Our position on AI in clinical care
Vitelo uses AI tools to support qualified clinicians in delivering care. AI does not diagnose, prescribe, or make clinical decisions. Every clinical output — every diagnosis, every treatment plan, every clinical recommendation — is the responsibility of a qualified, registered medical practitioner. This is not a limitation of our technology. It is a deliberate design principle.

History-taking
Virtual Nurse
An AI-assisted agent that takes a structured clinical history from a patient before a Vitelo Digital Clinic consultation.
The Virtual Nurse guides the patient through a structured set of clinical questions before their consultation begins. It organises the information gathered into a structured summary and presents it to the clinical team. The consultation can then focus on examination, investigation, and clinical decision-making rather than history-taking.
What AI does
AI structures the conversation, identifies relevant follow-up questions based on the patient's responses, and organises the output into a clinically useful format.
What AI does not do
The Virtual Nurse does not diagnose. It does not interpret symptoms. It does not make clinical recommendations. A qualified clinician reviews all information before any clinical decision is made.
Clinical oversight
All Virtual Nurse outputs are reviewed by the clinical team before the consultation. The clinician may discard, amend, or supplement any part of the history.

Real-time consultation
Clinical video platform
A secure, low-latency video connection that allows a remote specialist to observe and direct a physical examination conducted by a local doctor.
The Vitelo clinical video platform connects the local doctor and the remote specialist in real time. The specialist can observe the examination, direct the local doctor, review investigation results as they are produced, and communicate directly with the patient.
What AI does
The platform uses AI-assisted optimisation to maintain video quality under variable network conditions, ensuring the specialist can observe clinical detail clearly.
What AI does not do
The video platform does not interpret clinical findings. It does not flag abnormalities. It does not make recommendations. It is a communication tool.
Clinical oversight
The specialist is present throughout the consultation and is responsible for all clinical decisions made during it.

Ongoing monitoring
Remote monitoring data pipeline
A data pipeline that receives clinical measurements from patient devices at home and presents them to the care team for review.
Patients record clinical measurements — blood pressure, blood glucose, oxygen saturation, heart rate — using appropriate devices. Readings are transmitted securely to the Vitelo platform and presented to the care team in a structured format.
What AI does
The platform uses AI-assisted tools to flag readings that fall outside agreed parameters, drawing the care team's attention to values that may require clinical review.
What AI does not do
The monitoring platform does not interpret readings. It does not contact patients. It does not initiate clinical action. Flagged readings are reviewed by a qualified clinician before any action is taken.
Clinical oversight
All flagged readings are reviewed by a qualified clinician. The clinician determines whether clinical action is required.

Clinician-first design
Every AI tool in the Vitelo platform is designed to support the clinician, not to replace them. We build tools that make clinicians more effective, not tools that make clinicians unnecessary.
Transparency about what AI does
We are explicit about what AI does and does not do in every part of our platform. Patients and clinicians are never left uncertain about whether they are interacting with a human or a machine.
Human oversight at every step
No AI output in the Vitelo platform reaches a patient without being reviewed by a qualified clinician. We do not operate autonomous AI clinical pathways.
Clinical governance applies to AI
AI tools in the Vitelo platform are subject to the same clinical governance standards as any other clinical tool. They are validated, monitored, and reviewed as part of our clinical governance framework.
